Are you Wearing Excess Makeup??..Ways to Check.

Have you fallen victim of too much makeup, whereby you go out and you get comments like - your powder is too much, or your lip gloss is bleeding etc....sometimes you might think that a quick sneak-peek at the mirror as you rush out is all it takes for you to decide if there is too much makeup on your face. But most of the time, looking into a mirror to decide whether you have got excess makeup, does not really work. And a lot of times, due to the PHCN situation we encounter in this part of the world, we tend to do out makeup with touch light or candle light and this form of light usually gives a false look of what you applied on your face. Here are a few tips to help you decide whether you are wearing excess makeup or not.

1. Contrasting features

If two or more of your facial features are highlighted, then you most probably have too much makeup on you. The point is to enhance your natural beauty through makeup. If you have bright lipstick as well as a heavy black Smokey eye, it plays up your eyes as well as lips and that is a big no- no! The rule is to play up just one feature for the perfect look.

2. Visible foundation lines

Select a foundation that suits your skin tone. Masking on with a foundation that is several shades lighter or darker than your skin tone can make your skin look heavy and overdone. If you have trouble selecting the shade, salespeople at the beauty counter would be happy to help.

3. Not properly blending the foundation or concealer

Blending is the key to naturalism with makeup. Do away with the 'painted doll face' by blending and smudging the foundation well so that it is not distinctly visible over your skin tone as a separate mask. Make sure your hands are clean! or you would have dirty stuff on your face.

4. Blush

Be careful when you apply blush. It is one component that can work wonders to your face but is quite hard to master. If your cheeks literally look like apples, there would be something to laugh at. Blush should be applied on or just above the cheekbones according to your face shape.

5. Multicolored makeup

A lot of overly flashy colors used at once will make most faces look overdone. Stark colors can work well with certain combinations but when used during day time they are sure to have ‘overdone makeup’ written all over them. Stick to a shade or two at the most, at a time.

6. Checking your face in natural light

Your face will look different in different lights. If you have a colored light above your dresser, get it removed. Makeup should be done under natural or usual white light i.e.the lights under which you would spend your day. Natural light is not a liar so, check your face standing near a window, in the mirror before stepping out. Make sure you don't look washed out!

7. It takes quite some time to wash off at the end of the day

If it takes more than 15 minutes to wash off your makeup at night, then you have too much makeup on you. It is mandatory that you wash your face every night just before going to bed. Use a good facewash that will proper cleanse your face.

Nigeria No. 1 for skin-bleaching products says World Health Organisation

In a report recently released by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Nigeria has the highest percentage of users of skin bleaching . The report, which examines the dangers of mercury in cream lightening soaps and creams, revealed that over 77 percent of Nigerians use these products on a regular basis. This high figure is a cause for concern; skin lightening products contain mercury which has many adverse effects including skin irritations, pain, kidney damage and peripheral neuropathy.

According to Carolyn Vickers, WHO Chemical Safety Personnel, “mercury in soaps and creams eventually enters waste water and then enters the food chain as highly toxic methyl mercury. Pregnant women who consume fish containing methylmercury transfer the mercury to their foetuses that can later result in neurological deficits in children.”

From creams to cosmetics, WHO has warned against the use of all skin lightening products. The number of women using these products is increasing by the day as they pursue what is considered to be ‘fair-skinned beauty’ as defined by international magazines and the media and large. This trend “can be seen as perpetuating the colonial belief that being lighter is better”, says Ehowhow.com. The mercury in skin lightening products allows users to achieve a lighter skin tone by inhibiting the formation of melanin. What they fail to realize is that they are doing more harm than good to their skin.

Mercury has been banned in many countries. In the United States and the EU, the use of mercury compounds in cosmetics is prohibited by law.

While manufacturers have become creative in concealing the presence of mercury in their products, the WHO report provides tips on how to detect products that might be harmful. “The amount or concentration of mercury in a product may be labeled on the packaging or in the ingredient list. Names to look for include mercury, Hg, mercuric iodide, mercurous chloride, ammoniated mercury, amide chloride of mercury, quicksilver, cinnabaris, hydrargyri oxydum rubrum (mercury oxide) and mercury iodide”, the report says.

Skin lightening products are manufactured in countries like China, Mexico, Lebanon and the Dominican Republic and are commonly used in African and Asian nations. They come in soaps and creams which are generally applied to the skin overnight and left to dry. Those with very high levels of mercury contamination have a grey or cream coloured look. Although the product manuals usually contain a warning, “most companies selling products that contain mercury do not always list it as an ingredient”.

Tips to make your perfume last

Christian Dior has famously said that a woman's perfume tells more about her than her handwriting. There is perhaps hardly any woman who does not like to smell divine. Many say that it makes them happy and confident at the workplace and desirable and sexy during the cocktail hour. But we often realize that the perfume we had applied so carefully a few hours back has already disappeared. So what are the tips and tricks to make your perfume last longer?

1.Choose Right

The first step is to choose the right perfume. Select musky and woody based perfumes as they retain their scent longer while the citrus-based perfumes fade away faster because these oils vanish very soon. The more concentrated the perfume is, the more effective it is and therefore it lasts for a longer duration. The perfumes contain the maximum amount of concentrated oil while eau de parfum, eau de toilette, eau de cologne and lastly body mists are much diluted versions. So while the last three are best suited for daily use, perfume is ideal for special occasions. Perfumes are more expensive than the other three as well. And rightly they will let you breeze through the day with a sense of self assurance.

Further, the effectiveness of the fragrances can be conserved longer by storing them in refrigerators or in cool, dark places, away from direct sunlight. Keeping the bottles in their boxes is another good practice.

2. Apply Properly

Experts suggest that fragrances should not be applied on dry skin. A well hydrated skin traps the notes better, maximizing its effectiveness. So apply some fragrant oils and body lotions after a bath. Even spraying your favorite perfume after a shower when the pores are open, will make it last longer. The next step is to apply the scents on your pulse points like on your wrists, neck, temples, between the breasts, at the bend of the elbow and behind the knees. These are the areas where the veins run close to the skin and the rush of blood circulation will enhance its effect. Do not ignore the back of the knees and the ankles as scent travels upward and applying at these places will let the scent envelop you.
You may spray, dab or swipe (in case of a roll-on) to apply the perfume. Don not rub your wrists after the application as it will `crush’ the fragrance.(this a lot of us are guilty of including me)

3. Layer It

Another trick to make your perfume more effective and long-lasting is to build up the fragrance with layers. Use body oils, body talcs, body lotions, and perfumes of the same brand or of similar note. Several companies manufacture shower gel, body oils, moisturizers, colognes, and perfumes. If it is not available or too costly, preferably use a lightly scented or unscented soap, gel and lotions so that they do not overpower your perfume. Some apply Vaseline or olive oil at pulse points before spraying the scent to make it hold better. Occasionally spray your hairbrush it will extend the fragrance into your hair as well. Apply perfume before putting on your clothes and jewellery to avoid stains.

Another very common trick is to spray a cotton ball with the perfume and insert it into your undergarment for a lingering smell as often, when the perfume is used directly, they change notes after coming in contact with the skin. Many prefer to spritz scent in the air and then walk into the cloud of perfume so that it gets evenly distributed. But that may be an expensive proposition.

4. Reapply

With perfumes also it is better to follow the motto of less is more, experts suggest that if you are heading to a party straight from the office, there is no harm in applying it again in the evening for better result. Depending upon the concentration and brand, fragrances generally last between 4 and 8 hours. So always keep a bottle in your bag to reapply it before a meeting or outing.

The ultimate tip is to invest wisely on your perfume. The better and concentrated the product is the longer it will last and retain its notes perfectly, lessening the need to reapply it after every few hours.

3 Things Every Woman Should Know How To Do

Apart from being able to cook and do house chores, every woman should also be able do some little extra things. I have seen women driving Okadas, Keke Marwas and even all those big LAWMA trucks, its just amazing. Just yesterday, I even saw a lady on a Power Bike( ?I fear those things). But it just goes to show that women are no longer taking that role of being just sit at home wives but rather are taking on roles that many believe to be just Men roles. Here are a few things women should be able to do as well.....
